Massage therapists treat clients by applying pressure to manipulate the body’s soft tissue and joints. Research has shown that massage therapy improves muscle tone and circulation. Anecdotally, clients often report decreased pain, decreased stress, greater mobility, and an overall sense of relaxation and peace.

Techniques

  • This type of massage addresses a specific area(s) of the body. It often requires interaction with and feedback from the client during the session. Manual techniques, such as trigger point therapy and assisted stretching may be used. Other additions may include heat, cupping, vibration/percussion etc.

  • This type of massage is a “head to toe” session with minimal feedback from the client. It is designed to provide an opportunity for the client to leave the cares of the day behind.

  • “There are issues in the tissues” and “You have to feel it to heal it” are oft heard expressions. Clients will often describe holding stress in certain areas of their body. Perhaps the root cause of that chronic tension is emotional, or the result of a past trauma, either physical or emotional.

Through the use of breath and touch, the therapist facilitates an interactive experience, which allows the client to explore areas of tension. Emotional releases might occur, as the body is given permission to let go.

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) was developed by Dr. Emil Vodder in 1936 to address swollen lymph nodes. This technique is specifically focused on the lymph vessels to help the flow of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. Dehydration, diuretics, surgery, injury, scars, pregnancy and lack of movement can all lead to increased lymph viscosity. When lymph becomes too thick and sluggish, it can lead to edema (swelling), fibrosis (thickening/hardening of the tissue), pain and skin changes. MLD can help with edema reduction and scar management. Edema management may help relieve pain by allowing new lymphocytes to be available for tissue repair and prevention of fibrosis.

Unlike a typical massage, MLD uses a light, skin-stretching technique and follows a specific protocol. It can be done through light clothing, preferably with the client lying down. A full body MLD session lasts about 45 minutes, while MLD of the head neck and face takes about 15 minutes. There are some contradictions to having MLD, which will be discussed prior to your first appointment.
